What does it mean to be a Christian
As I set about writing this I realise that one of the obstacles to people identifying themselves with Jesus is that Christians make such a bad job of representing him. Whatever I write here will not begin to do him justice and is bound to be disagreed with to some degree by other Christians.

We might all agree that . . . . . . . .
"Christianity is about 'knowing' God - not knowing a bunch of facts about him"
Christians are often portrayed in very odd ways in film and on TV - don't believe what you see. We're not all "Dot Cottons" - in fact she is oddly unique! Christians come in all shapes and sizes, personality types, ages and interests. They won't all spout scripture at you. They may in fact be very shy about their faith.
Every Christian you speak to will express his/her beliefs and faith a little differently. Anyone who implies that they "know" all the answers is best avoided. Christianity is about knowing a person ( Jesus Christ) not knowing a bunch of facts. It is about following Jesus, not about religion. You don't get to know a person by reading about them, you have to meet them and spend time with them.
A few important thoughts . . . . . .
God loves you, with all your good points and your faults, all your strengths and all your weaknesses. He knew you even before you were born Christians aren't perfect people. God doesn't want to destroy your personality, He wants you to become all that He meant you to be
If you have a Bible don't try to start at the beginning and read it through like a novel. Go to the index at the front. Find one of the four 'Gospels' (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) Read one of them (Mark is often recommended) See what YOU make of Jesus

Lastly be aware that just like christians, "churches" differ too. Going to one may be very intimidating. Strictly speaking you don't have to belong to a "church" to be a christian - it is the relationship with Jesus that matters most. But as the old saying goes "You don't have to ..... but it helps!"
Jesus will relate to you, as you are, not as others will try to tell you to be. Start as you mean to go on by asking Jesus to lead you by his Holy Spirit.

Fairly 'grown-up' explanation

Short and rather simplistic but some find it helpful

But whatever you do - read a Gospel to see whether Jesus makes sense to you as a real person |
